In Istanbul Turkey on Sunday the 14th. Turkish police raided media outlets close to a U.S. based Muslim cleric and detained 24 people. Some include top executives and ex police chiefs. President Tayyip Erdogan calls a terrorist network conspiring to topple him. The raids on Zaman daily and Samanyolu television marked an escalation of Erdogan's battle with ex-ally Fetullah Gullen. Fetullah, has been in open conflict since a graft investigation targeting Erdogan's inner circle emerged a year ago. Turkish TV channels say top-selling Zaman's editor in chief Ekren Dumanli smiled and studied police documents before being led through the newspaper's headquarters to applause from staff crowded onto balconies. He said before police struggled to escort him through the crowds to awaiting car "Let those who have committed a crime be scared, we are not scared." People chanted "The free press cannot be silenced" and "Turkey is proud of you." The European Union was quick to contemn the raids. They say in an unusually strongly worded statement they were incompatible with media freedom and ran counter the European values. The U.S. state department said "as Turkey's friend and ally" Turkish authorities to protect media freedom and other democratic values. NATO allies often cited turkey as an example of a successful Muslim democracy. Critics accused Ersogan of intolerance of dissent and increasingly a divisive reversion to Islamic roots.
This is shocking to me because I personally wouldn’t connect terrorism with a media raid. This conflict with Turkey makes me wonder about how bad their media was to make them want to fight over this. It also makes me wonder what happened. For instance if the people are mad about how the media is working or if they believe the media needs to do more. This should be solved or it’s just going to get worse.
