Today November 9th 2014 is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This wall was built in 1961 to keep people from fleeing the communist east. This wall was 3.6 m in height and stretched for 155 km (96 miles) and split the country in half. It's fall in 1989 has become a powerful symbol of the end of the cold war. Many of the pieces of this wall are all over the world. " The fall of the Wall showed us that dreams can come. Nothing has to stay as it is." Mrs. Merkel had said at the opening of this event. She also stated after she left church that "it is important to remember those who have suffered because of this wall, not just in Germany but across Eastern Europe." About 138 people died trying to escape from West Berlin. About a year after the wall had collapsed world war 2 was "reunited." The West and Russia has been gaining tensing during and after the wall had collapsed. They have been raised because of Ukraine which at that time was part of the Soviet Union. "Bloodshed in Europe and Middle East against a backdrop of a breakdown in dialogue between the major powers is of enormous concern" said Mr. Gorbachev "The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some are even saying it's already begun." he said this after the wall had collapsed. Mr. Grobachev was a leader of the USSR in the late 1980's. He was credited with rapprochement with the West and creating a more liberal atmosphere which lead to the collapse of communists regimes in Eastern Europe in 1989. This day is celebrated in Berlin all day and has a moment in the day where they remember all the people that died. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29974950
